Finding God's Plan

Finding God's Plan is important in our lives. It is easy to chase after the things we desire and forget that God has a plan for us. My Plan should always give way to God's plan.

Maybe it is age, or maturity or something else, but I am driven to find God’s will and to do it. I am attracted to those verses in the Bible that address God’s will and God’s plan for His people.

God gave you and me Unique Abilities

Our wise God created the heavens and the earth. He created each of us and made each of us unique. He gave each of us certain abilities and skills. We each are unique, and I believe we each have a unique purpose in God’s plan.

We did not "just happened" or that we "just happened" to have a certain skill or even more than one skill. Our skills, like our fingerprints are unique and special. 

God has given us knowledge and understanding: “I am the Lord your God who teaches you for your own good, who leads you in the way you should go” (Isaiah 48:17). The God who made us, gives us understanding and is the source of all knowledge.

Wisdom is from God

“All this wisdom comes from the Lord Almighty. The plans God makes are wise, and they always succeed" (Isaiah 28:29).

Isaiah is one of the great prophets. He lived in Jerusalem in the latter half of the 8th century, probably from about 740 B.C. to 680 B.C., or approximately sixty-years.

He preached among the people of Judah in the southern kingdom when Judah was threatened by the powerful nation of Assyria. Even though Assyria was a mighty threat, Isaiah considered an even greater threat to Judah was Judah’s sin and disobedience to God, and their lack of trust in God.

God had a plan for the nation of Judah, and nothing was going to stop His plans. His plans are wise and always succeed.

This is also true for you and me. God has a plan for you and me. It should be our objective each day to seek God's plan for our lives.

Finding God’s Plan

Therefore, God has a plan for you and me. How do we determine what that plan is?

For me, the starting point is to recognize that our God is all wise and knowing and that all wisdom comes from Him. God sent Jesus to redeem us from the sins in this world and to show us the way to salvation.

So next, you ask, Elvin, I believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. However, “I don’t know what He especially wants me to do and how I fit into His plan.”

The Next Step in Knowing God’s Plan

I believe the next step for each of us is to love God with all our heart, with all our mind, and with all our strength. Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbor as yourself… do this, and you will live” (Luke 10:27-28).

Doing so, allows us to put our priorities in order. These are the initial steps to receiving God’s plan in our lives. When we focus on God, we put away self and self-centeredness. The communication with God through the Holy Spirit can guide us toward God’s will in our lives.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7) and “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10).

New Perspective of our Work

Once we recognize God as the source of our life, our knowledge and our wisdom, we receive a new perspective about our work. The very fact that we have the knowledge and the skill to do our work points us back to the source, God, who created us with certain skill sets and interests that come together in our lives. Living in the “fear” (the awe-filled awareness) of the Lord is the starting point for knowledge and wisdom. Recognizing this also allows us to learn from others to whom God has given complementary knowledge or skill. Creative teamwork on the job is possible when we respect God’s work in others and in ourselves (Theology of Work).

Whether we do the work of plumbers, engineers, doctors, electrician, writers, journalists or ministers, we are God’s creation and our focus should be on God first. He is the reason we are.

Experience God in our work and our work becomes fruitful.

“The plumber knows just what to do, for God has given him understanding,”

“The engineer knows just what to do, for God has given him understanding,”

“The doctor knows just what to do, for God has given him understanding.”

Co-Creators with God

Whatever we do, we become co-creators with God in our work as instruments in God’s hand for purposes deeper than we even know.

We are God’s creation first and plumbers and engineers second. God’s plan for us is to serve Him, to do, and to be what glorifies Him.
